AI In Interior Design
AI is everywhere, in every google search, in every app and now its has reached interior design too. While it may sound intriguing, its growing use in the design space raises concerns. AI design tools are undermining the profession of Interior Design. Becoming an interior designer takes years of education and real world experience. Designers carry a vast knowledge on design theory, architecture, lighting, materials, ergonomics, building codes and the actual experience of being human in a space.
AI design tools are developed from massive data sets of exiting images and projects. This means that their output is essentially a remix of preexisting designs. AI systems trained on real designers work without consent also raises the question of ownership. This goes beyond Interior Design. If AI continues to absorb and copy creative work without clear compensation or attribution it could undermine the livelihoods of those pursuing creative fields.
An online world flooded with AI images and information, will have AI learning from itself. Turning our creative work into copies of copies with no clean design intent or thought behind it. An echo chamber, lacking any real thought. While actual knowledge and skill will become lost in time. Uniqueness is forced out as AI hones in on what is most popular and what is most liked. The results can be cute, but generic. AI will never be able to create bespoke designs that truly reflect the client.
Interior Design is ultimately about people. About the human experience in the built environment. AI can generate images but meaningful spaces are curated through real human insight. A design professional understands the nuance of each design and possesses the ability to solve real world challenges. Most importantly designers understand people, taking the time to learn about lifestyle, needs, and personal taste in order to create a space that truly reflects you.
